Topic > The Real Side of Detroit: The Diverse City - 1677

Detroit is a very well-known and diverse city. “Somewhere behind its neglected, graffiti-covered skyscrapers are fascinating reminders of a city that was once among the richest in the world” (Gray). This city has been through a lot. Detroit was first settled by the French in 1701 and then used as a fur trading post. Jumping a little into the future, there have been riots and protests for equal rights on its busy streets. Detroit is also known as the Motor City. “By the mid-20th century, one in six American workers was employed directly or indirectly in the auto industry” (Sugrue). Yet after all this city has endured, Detroit is considered a place of fear. It has a lot of history and has a lot to offer if people would let it. Many might say that Detroit is nothing but slums, crime and drugs, but that is not the case. It's not just another run-down city or place to fear. Detroit is simply a work of art. Graffitied buildings and painted houses tell civilians a story of what they have been through. Even in the present century it has many things to offer, including live bands playing for free on the riverside walk, the winter explosion with arts and crafts activities, ice sculptures and much more. Most don't give Detroit an hour of the day before judging it simply based on the news and what they hear. Detroit has a lot to offer and show if a person wanted to see and participate in it the right way. Detroit is a very diverse city, it's been through riots, it's been the motor city and now it's a looked down upon city. Detroit's poverty rate is so high because of the crime rate. Homes are on the market for as low as $1. (Detroit: The Last Days) Nobody wants to buy houses because of all the stories they hear.... middle of paper... being revitalized. 1. Detroit is despised for its poverty and high crime rate, but its new buildings and major attractions continue to draw crowds. Not to mention that Detroit has always had crime problems dating back to the riots of the 1960s. Detroit has not experienced disasters but also triumphs. Some of these include being the motor city and playing a key role in the production of weapons for World War II. Unfortunately since these triumphs Detroit has fallen and is now trying to make a comeback every year. With the rebirth, attractions also play a key role in bringing Detroit back. They have major events like the International Auto Show, Lions games, and places like Belle Isle to attract people to visit and spend money in the city. Detroit is a fallen and mistreated work of art. Many people are now rebuilding the city to show its true beauty and potential.
