Topic > The Origins of the Species by Charles Darwin - 2024

Gothic fiction emerged in the late 18th century and was an extension of Romanticism. The main characteristic of the Gothic is the tale of terrifying situations with elements such as the sublime, madness, mystery, death, the supernatural and horror. But like all literary genres it underwent a transition. In the 19th century, the accession of Queen Victoria to the throne, the introduction of new scientific theories, the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species and industrialization changed the structures of society, its motivations and its beliefs. This influenced the genre, creating a new literary movement: Victorian Gothic, and therefore also novels written in these different periods. During this era the novels shared some of the conventional themes and characteristics of the early Gothic, but there was an addition of new elements such as science, atavism or the figure of the monster. The following pages cover the main differences and similarities between Victorian Gothic and its predecessor. traditional Gothic works. In particular this essay will explore and compare Stoker's Dracula with Lewis's The Monk and Radcliffe's A Sicilian Romance. Two aspects of the novels will be examined in more detail: the writing style and the setting to show how the Gothic genre developed and evolved and how it influenced the works mentioned above. The aim of this article is to explore the ways in which Stoker used traditional Gothic elements and the contribution he made to this genre. The writing style is a tool for creating fear and horror, but there are some differences in the way it is used in Early and Victorian Gothic. Authors like Ann Radcliffe used suggestion, sensitivity, and suspense to provoke terror. He did not describe... the central part of the paper... the characteristics of both genres and others that make Dracula deviate from typical early Gothic novels. In other words, according to critics McNally and Florescu, Dracula is classified as 'a realistic horror story rather than a gothic novel and demonstrates how the novel differs from Ann Radcliffe's novels'. According to this research work I came to the conclusion that Stoker contributed to this new genre and had an important impact on the writing style, topics and structure of the novel. In summary, he renewed the traditional Gothic style represented by Radcliffe and Lewis. As a result, many authors and critics talked about the novel and it became an influential work and an example of an entire literary movement. Furthermore, with the previous study it is demonstrated that Dracula is a connection, a link with Gothic fiction.
