Topic > The effects of underage drinking - 869

Every year thousands of underage people die due to alcohol consumption. Many young adults abuse the drinking age policy. It is implemented for substantial reasons, which contribute to making the environment safer for everyone. Drinking while underage is not only illegal, but it is also extremely harmful to your health. Furthermore, drinking in large quantities is extremely dangerous and can cause harmful events. There have been numerous attempts to create a law to lower the drinking age, but none have been successful. Contrary to what some may say, the drinking age should not be lowered because it would decrease maturity, promote poor behavior and damage reputations. If the drinking age were lowered, people's maturity would decrease. Various sources state that “[the minimum legal drinking age] should remain at 21 because people tend to be more mature and responsible at 21 than at 18” (ProCon.org). By the age of twenty-one you have experienced more life situations than an eighteen year old, making the twenty-one year old a more responsible human being. There is also evidence that “raising the drinking age has apparently increased liability among young people. Compared to 1980, when under 21 was the norm, in 1995 fewer college students reported drinking in the past month (68% vs. 82%) and binge drinking (39% vs. 44%)” (Egendorf 110). Younger adults tend to be less mature in drinking than older adults. Furthermore, if the drinking age were lowered, people would drink irresponsibly. When teens get drunk, the results can lead to immaturity and unawareness of their surroundings. Therefore, they create harm to others. Being drunk causes people's brains not to function normally and affects their active...... middle of paper ...... activities and other irresponsible behavior due to lack of maturity" (ProCon.org). Lowering the drinking age causes a lack of maturity in young adults. Therefore, the lack of maturity pushes people to do bad acts that change their lives forever among young adults, it would influence poor decisions that lead to injuries and it would damage their reputation. 18-year-olds can't handle the legal privilege of being able to drink. It's a huge responsibility that young adults are unable to shoulder. Setting the drinking age at 21 would reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents and driving and would be a good representation for responsible drinking in America Overall, alcohol consumption can occur in many ways, but keeping the legal drinking age at 21 would contribute to safer and more effective drinking. responsible.
