It was the 1968 album Waiting for the Sun that marked the appearance of a new aspect of Morrison's image, the Lizard King. Printed on the album cover was a poem titled "The Lizard's Celebration," in which he uttered, "I am the lizard king." Morrison later claimed that this poem was intended to be partly a joke, but it took on a life of its own and would play an important role in Morrison's mythology. In a 1970 interview, Morrison answers a question about being called the Lizard King: Stevenson: What do you think of some of the magazine articles that were coming out calling you the Lizard King and things like that? Morrison: Oh, I liked it! I liked it! I thought it was, you know, I've always liked reptiles, I've always had a fondness for them. . . We evolved from reptiles. . . I saw the universe as a giant peristaltic serpent and I saw all people, objects and landscapes as images on the facets of their skin, on their scales. I think that the peristaltic movement is the fundamental movement of life: swallowing, digestion, the rhythms of sexual intercourse. Even your basic single-celled structures have the same. . .Stevenson: Fluidity and movement?Morrison: Yes!14Morrison used the Lizard King attribution to expand his image, as seen in this interview, shaping it to his ideals of closeness to the earth, suggesting that the movement of a reptile mimics the fundamental movement of all life. He also used the image of the Lizard King in the theatricality of his stage performances and, consciously or unconsciously, to contribute to his own image, as well as that of the band. At best, it is possible to distinguish between Morrison as a shaman and Morrison as the Lizard King,...... middle of paper... difficult to confirm the cause of his death. Was it a suicide? Homocide? This uncertainty may have contributed to a Morrison-like image and myth. Now that her doctor has been convicted of negligence, the uncertainty has reduced. We will have to wait and see what develops. It is the public discourse, after the death of a celebrity, that determines the emergence of an icon. In books, films, and other media content about celebrity, various central narratives and values become associated with celebrity. After several years of continued public interest in the dead celebrity, the image and values associated with the celebrity become more significant and transcend factual details about the individual's historical existence. The next section will outline the elements that contribute to the construction of a celebrity's image after his or her death.
