Introduction: today we are here with Emily Dickinson. Thanks for joining us today, would you like to tell us a little about yourself? Emily: I was born December 10, 1830. I was born and raised in Amherst, Massachusetts. Just a couple of months before I was born, my parents moved in with my father's parents. Interviewer: It must have been a crazy childhood, tell us what it was like. Emily: I have an older brother, William, and a younger sister, Lavinia. I have always been very close to my sister. When I was 9, my dad got a new job, so we left my grandparents' house and bought our own. Some of my hobbies were cooking, gardening, learning to sing and play the piano, and reading books. Interviewer: You briefly mentioned your father there, would you like to explain what your parents were like? Emily: My father's name was Edward Dickinson and my mother's name was Emily Dickinson. My father was treasurer at Amherst College, a state legislator, and a member of the United States Congress. My mother stayed home to take care of the house and us children. My father did not allow us to read certain writings and was very strict about it. For example, he thought Walt Whitman was inappropriate. My sister and I had to smuggle them into the house because he didn't approve. Interviewer: Wow, that's really childhood. Now, you talked a little bit about how you and your sister were always close, did you have any other close friends? Emily: Yes, my sister-in-law has become one of my closest friends. I was also very good friends with Ben Newton and the Reverend Charles Wadsworth. Sadly, Ben died and Charles left with his wife. I was very sad about their departure, this affected my writing a lot.
