This quote said by Mahatma Gandhi, one of the most recognized leaders of the 19th century, can easily be used to recognize the importance of a society possessing unique individualistic traits and characteristics as individuality is the fuel needed to run a society. In a world where not even a simple fragment of individuality is present, society is likely to fracture to the point of total destruction. Furthermore, individuals should possess the ability to embrace their own uniqueness through which they will have the ability to understand distinctive phrases such as that said by William Channing, “no one should separate from his own individuality and become that of another”. The concept of individuality being vital to society is explored in Caitlin Tom's essay Individuality vs. Fitting in, in the American novel Little Women by Louisa Alcott and in the romantic but authoritative drama Jane Eyre. The concept presented in these three works portrays how the essence of individuality is a fundamental component for society as it helps in the recognition of social barriers, allows the ability to enhance change and allows one to appreciate the change invoked. First, the presence of Individuality within society allows individuals to identify social barriers because such choices are essential. Tom's essay talks about how "historically people have not been kind to what is different", however, he encourages this push within individuals as he goes on to say, "this [in fact] is what drove evolution of the company." Although many historical events such as the Holocaust and the transatlantic slave trade were not gratefully received, nevertheless… half of the document… conclusion, Caitlin Tom's essay Individuality vs. Fitting in, the American the novel Small Louisa Alcott's Women and the romantic yet empowering drama film Jane Eyre all exemplify the importance of a society relating to individualism as it leads to overcoming social barriers and stereotypes through recognition, encourages individuals to bring about change through their individualism unique and helps them evaluate the change called for in relation to their individualistic characteristics and traits. It is evident that individualism is fundamental to a society that intends to successfully maintain its civilization. Therefore, individualistic traits are the fuel that drives a society to its development and initiation through evolution. As a reminder, individuals should use their unique individualistic traits and characteristics to help improve society as a whole.
