Reading is an enjoyable activity but at the same time an essential part of life, as it is important for survival in the modern world. As Rohal Dahl quoted: “Books… if you want to become something, they are vital in life” (www.stlwritersguild.org 11/13/10). Children should be encouraged to read from an early age, as the ability to read allows them to access information, become fluent speakers and be creative writers. This is demonstrated by a study conducted by Eckhoff (1983) on second grade students, examining the writing of two different groups: one who read a very simplified textbook while the other read a text containing many literary forms; the results showed children who were exposed to various literary forms literary forms, seemed more adept at using different literary forms in their writing than those who were presented with simplified texts (www.vtaide.com 4/11/10). Reading has played an important role in my life, especially in the early stages of my intellectual development. One of the first books I was introduced to were hardcover illustrated word books. These books had names of everyday objects along with their images allowing me to recognize objects in the house. Nursery rhymes such as: Old MacDonald, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Jack and Jill along with many others were also part of this reading journey. My mother particularly liked reciting them to me, while I began to love the beautiful images in my book of nursery rhymes. I also liked the musical atmosphere they created, which over time allowed me to grasp the words easily, allowing me to recite the rhymes myself. As Carl Sagan quoted: "One of the greatest gifts adults can give to their children and to society is to read to children"... middle of paper... continued Stephy and Callum begin to grow up, become closer and fall in love , however racial segregation between the two races is a big problem along with the birth of their daughter Rose. As the story progresses, Rose grew up and soon began to discover her heritage, which leads her into greater danger. Malorie Blackman is quite a creative writer, as she has begun to distort racial history. In this series he made black more superior by making whites inferior. In conclusion, I am starting to notice a drastic change in my reading pattern, as during my early years I started reading various fiction books, however this pattern has changed and I now start engaging in books that reflect the realities of life and the world present in which we live. I look forward to expanding this reading journey and improving my current knowledge through reading.
