Symbolism is the use of an object to represent an idea. In “The Barrel of Amontillado,” Fortunato's costume, especially the jester's hat, is symbolic because he was mocked when Montresor tricked him into killing him. Another symbol is the Amontillado, the drink was used to deceive Fortunato and also due to Fortunato's ego, drinking the wine first led him to be deceived. The rotting house is intended to be both literal and metaphorical symbolism. The house is said to have “empty eye-shaped windows” with “decayed trees” and “mushrooms” everywhere.
