Martin Luther was a Christian theologian and Augustinian monk. He was born on November 10, 1483 to Hans and Margaretha Luder in Eisleben, Germany. The day after his birth he was baptized on the day of Saint Martin of Tours. Martin's father wanted more for his youngest son, so he did everything he could to involve his son in community service and honor their family. His father sent him to various schools in Mansfeld, Magdeburg and Eisenach. In 1501, at the age of seventeen, Martin entered the University of Erfurt. He earned his bachelor's degree just a year after enrolling in college and earned his master's degree three years later. Martin was enrolled in the law course at the university, but everything came to an abrupt end in 1505. In the summer of 1505 Martin was caught in a summer storm and was almost struck by lightning. Martin was so horrified that he asked Saint Anne for help, to whom he then promised to become a monk. Martin was a man who kept his promises, so he left law school and became a monk. On July 17, Luther entered the Augustinian monastery of Eruft. He dedicated his life completely to the monastic life, to the effort to do generous and good work to please God and to the service of others through prayer for their souls. He devoted himself to flagellations, fasting, constant confessions, and long hours of prayer and pilgrimage, even as peace with God eluded him. Luther reflected on himself a lot in the monastery, so his superior, Johann von Staupitz, believed that Luther needed more work to keep himself busy and take his mind off the many things he was reflecting on, so he ordered Luther to pursue an academic career .
