Discrimination against Native Americans Contrary to popular belief, discrimination against Native Americans in America still exists widely in the 21st century! So you might ask, why? Well, to answer that question, I'll give you 3 of the countless reasons why this unfortunate group of people are punished so harshly for a few good reasons. So now let's get into it! First of all, unemployment rates are usually low in some areas as in many other races. The worst situation is in Alaska, the northern plains and the southwestern regions. The gap between them and whites is also greater in the southern area. And to top it off, the recovery rate is quite slow. The next reason we will look at is the stereotypical images commonly seen in literature and mascots. Mainstream media such as "Dances With Wolves," "The Lone Ranger" and "The Last of The Mohicans" and the mascots of professional sports teams such as the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Blackhawks all include depictions of Native Americans who for some, are offensive.
