Abigail and Proctor share a small affair when she worked for him, which led to the two sleeping together. As a result, Abigail remains in love with Proctor. Her love for Proctor is demonstrated when she says, "I seek John Proctor who took me from sleep and put knowledge in my heart!" (24). The lust Abigail feels for Proctor drives his motivations to try to kill Elizabeth so she can be with him forever. Abigail’s plan to follow through with her motives is shown when Betty Parris states, “You did it, you did it! You drank a spell to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a spell to kill the good Proctor!” (19). Abigail uses witchcraft to avoid getting into trouble after being caught in the woods doing this. After fearing that Betty Parris or Mary Warren might expose her incentives, Abigail angrily states, "Let one of you say a word, or the limit of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the dark of the night". a terrible night and I will bring a stinging reckoning that will make you shiver” (20). This quote shows Abigail's ruthless ability to dissemble and her mentality to stand with Proctor no matter what. In addition to Proctor's lust, Abigail is also driven by Elizabeth's jealousy. Elizabeth hired Abigail to work for her at her home, but fired her shortly thereafter for no specific reason. When Parris asks Abigail about this, Abigail exclaims, “My name is good in the village! I will not allow it to be said that my name is dirty! Good Proctor is a gossiping liar!” (12). This shows Abigail's anger towards Elizabeth when the witchcraft accusations begin. Additionally, Abigail mentions her anger towards Elizabeth because she is angry about a minor matter. Abigail's ruthlessness continues as the show progresses, and
