GeographyThe country of Russia is located in the Asian continent and its capital Moscow is located at Latitude 55*45'07” N Longitude 37*36'56”E and is at 495 feet (151 m) above sea level. Russia, also known as the Russian Federation, has a land area measuring 6,592,850 square miles and is almost twice the size of its largest country, Canada, and 70 times larger than the United Kingdom – and its size is always been the basis of its colossal potential strength. This country is the largest in the world by surface area and covers eleven different time zones. It borders six different countries which are; Sea of Okhotsk, Finland, Belarus, Ukraine, Mongolia, China and Estonia. Due to the enormous size of this country, the government has divided its areas into eighty-three different federal subjects. Twenty-one of these entities are considered republics and can establish their own languages and constitutions. These republics are; Adygea, Altai, Bashkortostan, Buryitia, Chechnya, Chuvashia, Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Kalmykia, Karachay-Cherkessia, Karelia, Khakassia, Komi, Mari El, Mordovia, North Ossetia-Alania, Sakha, Tatarstan, Tuva and Udmurita. Russia is less generously endowed with suitable agricultural areas. The country is roughly divided into three main areas. The tundra lies north of the Arctic Circle and cannot support human life. It is too cold for the trees because the ground beneath is permanently frozen and sometimes reaches a depth of several hundred meters. Mosses, lichens and small shrubs are the only natural vegetation that grows in this region. The fundamental hunger for land drove peasants into these areas, and Soviet industrial and prison camp societies also attracted workers. The Russian taiga represents almost a quarter of the world's unclaimed area. Russians love to celebrate and take most national holidays very seriously, as is done in the United States. New Year is the most celebrated holiday, followed by Orthodox Christmas, so Russians enjoy the entire week of vacation at the beginning of the new year. About 80% of the population is ethnic Russian; the remaining 20% covers more than 150 nationalities living in Russia. The declared and spoken official language is Russian. As for religion, the majority of Russians are Orthodox Christians, but there are also many Muslims, Catholics, Jews and Buddhists. The economy waxes and wanes like in most countries and balances with time, world trade, tourism and inflation. All in all, Russians are a proud, strong-willed people capable of surviving a variety of living conditions that would destroy most other cultures..
