The American Dream began as propaganda to get the American people of the early 20th century to work harder to build a successful economy. The idea of the American Dream is that every American citizen has an equal opportunity to make money in addition to owning a big house, some land, and having a family with children. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck illustrates how the American dream, however simple, is impossible to achieve. Since everyone has their own interpretation of the American dream, Steinbeck uses George and Lennie, Crooks and Curley's wife to show how the American dream is impossible to achieve and how important the dream is for people so that they can move forward with their own life. George and Lennie traveled together after the death of Lennie's Aunt Clara, the two constructing a dream in which they discuss how they imagine their lives once they finish working. “OK One day – we'll get the knave together and have a little house and a couple of acres, a cow and some pigs and-” (Steinbeck 16). Both George and Lennie share a dream that one day they will have saved up enough money to buy their own farm and live out the rest of their days together so that when they work they will work for themselves and can do what they want on their own terms. Even though George and Lennie have been working towards their dream for a long time, it is still a challenge for them to achieve it due to Lennie's disabilities and him causing them to run out of Weed. “God almighty, if I were alone I could live so easily. I could get a job and work without problems. No mess, and when the end of the month came I could take my fifty bucks and go to town and... mid-paper... the most I could get. George and Lennie will never be able to realize their dream as during Lennie's life he has made it too difficult to hold a job due to his disability and when he dies the dream of ever being able to be realized ends. Steinbeck also illustrates the difficulty of black men achieving their dreams through Crooks. Crooks is just like all the other men on the farm, he is seen as weaker (due to the color of his skin) than everyone else, which gives him an unfair advantage in achieving his dream. Finally, Steinbeck uses Curley's wife to demonstrate how woman was seen more as a material object than a person in this time period, which, much like Crooks, gives her an unfair advantage in achieving her dream. In the end, none of the characters in Of Mice and Men are able to achieve their goal due to one of their personal problems or one of the many social limitations in this period..
