Topic > Wound Care: Sterile Dressing Modifications - 1106

GoalsAccording to Bastable and Doody (2007) a goal is a specific, single, one-dimensional behavior. Goals are used to form a map to provide guidance on how to achieve a particular goal. In this lesson students will have two objectives. The first is for nursing students to be able to identify all the supplies needed to change a sterile dressing and to correctly assess when a dressing change or reinforcement is necessary. The lesson plan will contain the following objectives:1. After the classroom lesson, the student will identify all materials needed to change a sterile dressing.2. After a small group session, the student will be able to recognize the eight signs that indicate when it is necessary to change or reinforce a sterile dressing. These two behavioral learning objectives both fall under the cognitive umbrella. The former is at the knowledge level, while the latter falls at the understanding level (Bastable & Doody, 2007). The proficiency level evaluates the student's ability to remember the information presented to him or her during instruction. The level of understanding then allows the student to take the information that has been presented to them and demonstrate that they understand the information and know how to apply it. One of the objectives of this course is for students to be able to describe prevention strategies in the care of adult medical-surgical patients. This lesson accomplishes this goal by preparing students to be able to identify all the materials needed to change a sterile dressing and to be able to correctly assess when a dressing change or reinforcement is necessary to prevent infection. Infection is the major risk that compromises wound healing. This...... middle of paper...... sterile dressing before this lesson is taught they will be given a questionnaire. The goal will be to determine the current state of students' skills, knowledge, and abilities (Rouda & Kusy, Jr., 1995). The information I will be looking for is whether students already know how to identify when a sterile dressing needs to be changed or reinforced and whether they know the materials needed to make a change and the process for making the change. The same questionnaire will be administered at the end of the lesson to see if the level of knowledge has changed. If the level of knowledge does not increase significantly, you may need to evaluate the design of the lesson plan to understand why it is failing to provide students with the intended knowledge. The lesson may need to be modified to be more effective.
