Historical AssignmentThe Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is located in Southeast Asia. This country is renowned for having the most recorded kingdoms in the world. (1) About 64 million people live in Thailand and its largest city is Bangkok which is also its capital. Thailand experienced rapid economic growth between 1985 and 1995, (2) and today is a newly industrialized country popular with tourists. Architecture in Thailand is a vital part of the community as it represents both the struggle of living there due to bad weather and also the cultural significance of Thailand and its religious beliefs. Due to the heat of the afternoon sun in Thailand, the lower part of the house is cooler. Homes reflect the climate and better resist nature's attacks. (3) Thailand has succeeded in developing appropriate regional variations in its religious and vernacular buildings. Today, in Thailand, especially in Bangkok, there is a great deal of contemporary architecture, as well as a contemporary twist on more traditional Thai architecture, such as stilt houses. (4, 5) This briefly outlines the contrasting difference between my two Thai architects named Duangrit Bunnag and Dr. Pinyo Suwankiri.Dr. Pinyo Suwankiri was born in Songkla in 1937 while Duangrit Bunnag was born in 1966 in Bangkok. Although there is a huge age difference between these two architects, both have flourished over the past three decades with their projects recognized in Thailand. Pinyo Suwankiri has dedicated a lot of time and done extraordinary work to preserve the dignity and style of Thai architecture. The traditional form of Thai architecture is close to his heart and Dr. Suwankiri values it deeply, which is... the focus of the paper... his work as Dr. Suwankiri strove to preserve the dignity of conventional Thai architecture structure on stilts. Pinyo's projects are smaller than Duangrit's. Here is a table from some information I have gathered that states and compares the results obtained: Quoting China Williams (2009) from the book Thailand, Dr. Suwankiri is a traditional building specialist whose work is ubiquitous and the model for an institutional aesthetic of traditional architecture. Next, he explains that Duangrit Bunnag wowed the design world with his almost naked glass boxes that offer a contemporary twist on mid-century modernism. The contrasting difference between these two architects cannot be highlighted better. Both offer a lot when it comes to Thai architecture and both make a bold statement with their unique works.
