Topic > The War Measures Act: Was it necessary? - 1289

“These men only ask for the same thing, fairness and only fairness. This, so far as I can, they and all others shall have." - Abraham Lincoln. This quote basically states that everyone wants fairness and that the government should do what it can to provide it to the people. On the contrary , the War Measures Act effectively limits freedom and fairness. The War Measures Act is a law that gives the federal government complete emergency powers during a war, invasion, or rebellion. It allowed the government to do whatever it was necessary for “the security, defence, peace, order and welfare of Canada” (Morton and Granatstein, 1989, p.7). It was used during the first war world war (1914), the Second World War (1939) and the October Crisis (1970) also have a negative effect on the esteem of Canada as it can be seen as a hypocritical democratic nation, in which a model nation for the maintenance of peace used a totalitarian force such as the War Measures Act. By unfairly punishing Canadian citizens, imposing conscription, and using it needlessly to address feared threats, the use of the War Measures Act was neither just nor necessary. The unjust punishment of citizens permitted by the War Measures Act was inequitable. When used in World War I, World War II and the October Crisis, it led to the unjust punishment of Canadians by causing the internment of “enemy aliens” and forced registration with the government. During World War I, Canada had been at war with Germany, Austria, Hungary and Ukraine, so immigration from there was suspended and people from there were considered "enemy aliens" and were interned. This meant they had to register in the middle of paper… the War Measures Act is not effective, fair or useful. The War Measures Act is unjust and non-essential due to the unwarranted abuse of Canadian Citizens, limitation of conscription, and unnecessary use against apprehended threats. The War Measures Act is unjust and useless because it allowed for unjust punishments during both the world wars and the October Crisis. He aided conscription during World War I and World War II, which ultimately failed and caused many divisions and problems in Canada. Furthermore, it has taken away citizens' freedoms and rights that Canada is known for. The act was unnecessary and not right. Fairness means treating people with respect and making decisions without self-interest and is part of our daily lives. “You should treat others as you would like others to treat yourself” – The Golden Rule should always be used to the fullest extent.
