Topic > Lesbianism: Femmes and Lipstick Lesbians - 2424

Lesbianism is a real sexuality that is studied a lot, especially because when something is not fully understood, the idea is examined and conceptualized rigorously. Since the birth of the religion, lesbianism has been considered a sin; as technology has advanced and time has passed, people have slowly become more accepting. Heterosexuals often misunderstand lesbians, as do lesbians who judge others of the same sexual identity. Many people think that all lesbians are the same, butch women. But this is not the case, sexuality is more fluid and lesbians, like all of us, are individuals. The lesbian community is diverse, and stereotypical misconceptions exist among lesbians themselves, just like those that exist in the straight community. To fully understand the topic presented it is necessary to define some terms. Many people do not know the full definition of these terms because they are often used incorrectly. First, a butch is usually a male lesbian, but it can also be used to call either gender male. Femme is the opposite, usually referring to a lesbian who is feminine, but also means a drag-queen and can be used to describe both women and men as feminine (Queer-ictionary). Commonly when people think of lesbians, they think of the butch/femme relationship where one takes on the role of a boy, the butch, and the other takes on a feminine role, the femme. This is the type of relationship most people think of when talking about lesbian relationships. However, there are also lipstick lesbians, who are usually closeted lesbians who reject the idea of being masculine and like to wear makeup, dress up and wear high heels. Usually lipstick lesbians are attracted to other lipsticks... paper users would increase, which seems to be the case. People find it difficult to understand others who are different from them. With education and exposure to all types of lesbians and gays, stereotypes and misunderstandings about nonconforming individuals may decrease. Gender norms and stereotypes go hand in hand, however, most people modify them in one way or another. It is important to understand lesbians and sexuality is not a clear concept, it is fluid. The queer community as a whole also needs to learn to accept itself more and support people regardless of how they present themselves. Stereotypes are just an attitude towards a group of individuals and do not necessarily have to lead to prejudices or anti-group behaviour. So far, the LGBT community has come a long way from overcoming stereotypes, but there is still a lot to do to adapt them to social norms.
