Montaigne, Descartes and Pascal all believe in a superlative truth that is unpredictable through the truth commonly accepted in society. Montaigne states that even contradictions are not contradictions in truth (Montaigne, p.75). Not believing in the possibility of this lack of contradiction in the truth would be considered skepticism, skepticism being the unwillingness to believe anything for any reason. This same skepticism is explained by Descartes as a self-refuting falsehood with his quote “I think, therefore I am” (Descartes, p.24). Finally, Pascal also agrees with this notion because he states: "We must be able to doubt where necessary, have certainty where necessary, submitting where necessary. Whoever does not act in this way does not understand the power of reason" (Pascal, p. .93). This reason – your perception of what will lead to happiness (Pascal, p.31) – is persuaded by dogmatism, skepticism and blind faith. Pascal describes skepticism as "doubting everything so as not to know where to submit" (Pascal, p. 93) - a statement in agreement with Montaigne and Pascal. Dogmatism is described as a “certainty that everything is demonstrable” (Pascal, p.93). However, this is an unacceptable belief because it reduces the infinity of the universe to a finite explanation. Finally, blind faith is described as “submission in everything, not knowing where one should use one's judgment” (Pascal, p.93). In other words, blind faith means believing what others tell you without considering what you think is right. Indeed, there is no explanation anyone can give of God or truth because these are both infinite terms, and when infinite terms are expressed in the finite, they become nothingness (Pascal, p.86). The truth - when it is... middle of the paper ......and in finite terms because those finite terms turn God and truth into nothingness. This is why bridging the infinite abyss is so impossible with finite means. Only the infinite can bridge the infinite abyss. Furthermore, we know that there is a chasm to bridge, for even the greatest doubts of skeptics cannot deny that we exist as we question whether we think it is self-affirming. We exist; however, most individuals do so only by realizing the world of the finite. It is the realization of the difference between the infinite and the finite – omniscience – that allows us to realize that the finite is nothing in relation to the infinite. Since God and truth are both nothing in the finite, there is no way to describe them finitely; however, understanding the inability to distinguish these two concepts is exactly how you will understand them.
