Social control theory tries to explain why we all don't commit crimes. Social control theory gained prominence in the 1960s. Travis Hirschi presented his new theory built on existing concepts of social control. His theory of social control stated that ties to school, family, and other aspects of society serve to decrease the tendency towards deviant behavior. Hirschi believes that because of bonding with peers, teachers, friends and family, and activities such as education or career goals mean people have less time to commit crimes.
