THE MOSES OF HIS PEOPLE 1THE MOSES OF HIS PEOPLE 2Who is Harriet Tubman?Araminta Harriet Ross, formally known as Harriet Tubman, was born into slavery in March 1820 in Dorchester County, Maryland (Civil War, 2014) . As a child, Tubman was “hired” by various bosses who were mean and cruel to her (Civil War, 2014). She suffered a terrible head injury at the hands of one of these cruel slave masters that caused seizures and "visions" for the rest of her life, which she believed were sent by God (Civil War, 2014). In 1840, Tubman's father gained his freedom following a stipulation in his master's will, but continued to work for his former owner's family (Civil War, 2014). Araminta and the rest of her family were also supposed to gain freedom, but the law was ignored and kept the rest of the family in slavery (Civil War, 2014). In 1844, Araminta married a free black man and changed her name from Araminta Ross to Harriet Tubman (Civil War, 2014). In 1849, Tubman became seriously ill due to complications from a head injury, leading her owner to decide to sell her, but he was unable to find a buyer (Civil War, 2014). After his sudden death, the family began selling all their slaves (Civil War, 2014). Not wanting the rest of her family to be separated, Tubman was determined to flee (Civil War, 2014). The Underground RailroadHarriet Tubman escaped slavery in 1849, fleeing to Philadelphia (Biography, 2014). She initially left Maryland with two of her brothers, Ben and Henry, on September 17, 1849 as a notice published in the Cambridge Democrat offering a $300 reward for the return of Harriet, Harry, and Ben (Bio, 2014).
