Police corruption and misconduct manifests itself in many different forms. A basic definition of police corruption is when an officer becomes involved in crimes in which they exploit their position, by action or omission, to gain improper financial advantage. The main reason for such corruption is typically personal gain, such as bribery. Police abuse of authority occurs in three different general areas such as physical abuse, psychological abuse and legal abuse. Physical abuse is abuse in which excessive force or physical harassment is used. Psychological abuse occurs through disrespect, harassment, ridicule, excessive arrests, or intimidation. Finally, legal abuse is abuse that occurs during illegal searches and seizures or production of evidence (Pollock, 2012). One source describes police corruption in eight different ways. They include: corruption of authority, bribery, opportunistic theft, extortion, protection of illegal acts, correction, direct criminal acts, and internal profits (Roebuck & Barker, 1974). To get into the different types of corruption and misconduct, Pollock discusses six. You have tipping, professional courtesy, alcohol and drug use at work, corruption, sexual misconduct and criminal cops. Tips are basically items that are given to individuals, not because of the relationship between the receiver and the giver, but rather based on the role or position of the receiver. A common example of this would be accepting free coffee. Many stores offer these things to appreciate the officer's work. A great example of this is the Holiday gas station in Marquette. The store offers free coffee to officers in the Marquette area. Police courtesy is a common practice of not providing a...... means of paper......ure tends to be the reason for misconduct, so changing it is an important aspect. Finally, a department needs ethical leadership. If strict and fair discipline is involved, any misbehavior is discouraged from sight (Pollock, 2012). You might ask, if law enforcement works to protect the public, why would they commit corruption as they do? As described above, corruption occupies an important role in the law enforcement sector of society. The whole concept is quite complex even though it may seem obvious to many people. Learning about the many types of corruption and misconduct is only the beginning, then, of understanding why officials commit the conduct for which they do. With all this, the measures that must be taken to rid society and police departments of the constantly present behavior become evident.
