Topic > The Treaty of Versailles - 1019

The treaty was received negatively in America, so much so that it was actually never ratified. France was happy with the money they received from Germany and that the Rhine River was being demilitarized, but France was still unhappy that their industries had been destroyed and Germany was relatively unscathed. Britain had an overall satisfied reaction to the treaty. The war was over and Germany was being punished, even though there was consensus that Germany should have been punished more severely. Germany was obviously not enthusiastic about the treaty. They lost much of their land, their industries and their population. On top of this Germany had been humiliated due to Article 31 and was heavily in debt due to Article 235. The resulting dissatisfaction on both sides of the treaty meant that the Treaty of Versailles was essentially a failure. The League of Nations did not last and World War II was just around the corner
