Fear of failure can push a student to take extreme measures to achieve an academic goal. This may mean sacrificing all the time available and exerting all the energy possible to acquire the desired grade. Putting personal desires on the back burner contributes to losing perspective on the important things in life, such as household chores and family. In the same way that a person defines themselves by how well they do their work, a student may be tempted to define themselves by their grades. Fear of bad grades only worsens a person's fear of failure. A high school student could communicate his internal struggles if he felt that external forces were not the cause of his problems. As a high school student, it is difficult to convey to a parent that maintaining an A in difficult classes in school is burdensome. You might think that the student is extremely dedicated to school but in reality needs help. Commitment to academics is generally considered a great thing, but it is only if it is done for the right reasons. Parents should communicate that being successful in school does not mean giving an arm and a leg to get perfect grades. Stressed students should release any fears they have had about school and take time to take part in fun activities from time to time.
