Miles later discovered why he was the way he was and why he smoked, drank and was head over heels for boys. After his death he actually tried to find out who he was and whether his death was a suicide mission or a complete accident. The whole time they were friends, stuck in this state of sin and so much sadness over Alaska's mom dying and the only way she could cope was to drink and smoke. Miles said, “I would always love Alaska Young, my crooked neighbor, with all my crooked heart” (218). After a while, Miles was finally able to accept Alaska's death and she is in a better place. He finally knew how he felt, what his mother's guilt was
