Topic > Achilles The Iliad Character Analysis - 1976

“Wife, all this concerns me too. But I would be dishonored, terribly ashamed among the Trojan men and women in their long robes, if, like a coward, I ran away from the war. My heart will never push me to do so, because I have always learned to be courageous, to fight at the front alongside the Trojans, striving to bring fame to my father and to myself.” (VI, 540-557) Even the virtues of Hector are much appreciated by the Greeks. Although they admire Achilles' heroic courage and strength, Hector remains the sympathetic hero of the Iliad. Achilles' power and strength reduced Hector to a non-human thing dragged into the earth. However, in an attempt to humiliate Hector, Achilles diminished his stature among men. Hector, who represents the best of humanity because he loves his family and wants to protect it, denounces the tragic flaw of the excessive pride of Achilles, the great hero of the world.
