Henry Ford said, "Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, working together is success", Ford's quote applies to everything and everyone who comes together in the beginning to make progress that leads to success, just as we must do to help the mentally ill. Things need to change so that mentally ill people do not harm themselves or the people around them in society. The law and psychology must work together to establish stricter guidelines to prevent mentally stable people from manipulating the rights we give the mentally ill, they must also treat the mentally ill before crime occurs, and ultimately the mentally ill. mind should not be placed in prisons due to the more serious effects which will harm them worse in the long run. Adopting a more stringent mental capacity test would reduce the amount of liars who rely solely on the insanity defense to get a lesser sentence. The law has already shown a good start in trying to prevent perfectly mentally stable people from manipulating the right to insanity that the law has granted to the mentally ill who actually need it: "About a quarter of the States have established a verdict separate of 'Guilty but mentally ill' (GBMI)... The consequence of receiving GBMI is that the individual is convicted and sentenced to a criminal sentence. It is a verdict available to the jury when the conclusion is that the defendant committed the 'act accused but suffers from a mental disorder, however, not to the level necessary to satisfy the crime of insanity,” (Torry 259-260). The complex has clearly begun to make small changes by creating the GBMI, but they have yet to make further changes progress so that people do not manipulate the system. For example, Terry Sturgis, 35... at the center of the paper... uncertainty about life after prison and inadequate health services" (187), placing these types of people in prison is doing nothing but making things worse. Bottom line, law and psychology need to do a better job working together so we can achieve the best outcome for everyone. Being mentally ill is not a bad thing, it is simply a bad thing when you cannot control your impulses: “It is a disorder that damages the human mind and prevents us from distinguishing between right and wrong actions… They are brain disorders that cause a reduced ability to cope with the demands of life” (Torry 255). By coming together, we can make progress and succeed by creating stricter guidelines, treating the mentally ill before crimes occur, and placing them in institutions, not prisons. This success can be an overall positive thing for the individual and society.
