IntroductionIn recent years, globalization has experienced exponential growth, becoming an influential factor in today's societies. The continuous movement around the world of people from different countries and cultures has led to an increase in intercultural communication. Australia is rapidly transforming into a multicultural nation attracting tourists from a wide range of countries. As a result, it has become more important for people in Australia to be culturally sensitive and aware in order to successfully interact with these visitors from different cultures. These interactions are particularly important at international airports (Lie, 2003). Staff members are expected to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds, with varying degrees of English proficiency, and who speak different languages. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the top international visitors in 2014 from non-English speaking countries were China, Japan and Singapore. The purpose of this professional development resource is to educate airport employees to communicate effectively with travelers from these three countries. This literature review will focus on the basic research conducted in order to obtain the knowledge behind the construction of this PDR.
