Topic > Energy Resource: Oil Sands and Nuclear Energy - 1000

Oil sands are a mixture of water, clay sand and black oil found in various places around the world such as Venezuela and under Canadian forests. Most of the world's oil currently comes from tar sands, and the oil is used for gasoline. Oil sands mining is quite tough and difficult to accomplish. Sands cannot be pumped in their natural state. It must be extracted through open pit mining techniques. After extraction, the sands are transported to the extraction plant where a hot water process separates the bitumen from the sand, water and minerals. This process releases the bitumen from the oil sands and causes tiny air bubbles to stick to the bitumen droplets that float to the top of the separation vessel, where the bitumen can be removed. (Oil Shale and Tar Sands Program, 2012) Tar mining is very profitable. Until recently, extracting oil from tar sands was very expensive, technologically difficult and complex. Technological progress and the high price of oil, above $80 a barrel, have made it possible to extract oil profitably. While this causes pollution and disposal of non-renewable resources, it is helping the economy. (Oil Shale and Tar Sands Program, 2012) Oil sands are natural mineral beds found within the earth. It is made up of water, sand and bituminous coal formed by the pressure of dead plants underground over a long period of time. After the sand is mined, it goes through multiple processes that turn it into oil. Oil is used for many things such as automobiles and gasoline. Oil is converted into gasoline through multiple processes. Gasoline is used to fuel engines. Tar sands are a very important part of oil-producing communities, considering they make up the majority of oil currently extracted. We could have gas stations like gas stations that power the battery. This would also cost a lot, but as long as there is money to spend it would be worth it. Also, our economy would increase, thanks to the circulation of money. I think this could be a great idea if we could figure out how to get electricity. We may have “farmers” who have fields of solar panels or wind turbines that are paid by the government or power companies. Also, another issue is how to ship electricity over power lines. There may be trucks powered by electricity that have huge batteries that they fill it up and then haul it around the US like semi trucks do This would also create more jobs, improve our economy, I believe it would also help us save money END.
