Topic > The Maturing Process in True…

Written by Virginia Euwer Wolff, True Believer is a story that shows a window into the life of a young woman named Verna La Vaughn who was going through the maturing process. Throughout the story Verna La Vaughn has overcome many obstacles in her daily life. Since the story began when Verna La Vaughn was 15 years old, the story had a very eventful feel because Verna La Vaughn had many lessons to learn because she was growing into a young woman. Verna La Vaughn was the main character and narrator. He told the story as if it were his diary, which he wrote daily. Verna La Vaughn's personal appearance was never discussed in the story; however the reader was informed about his family life. He lived with his mother in a small apartment where they had lived all his life. L Vaughn's father had died when she was little, and she had always missed Vaughn and her mother dearly. Vaughn had a lot of respect for her single mother for putting a roof over her head and always showing her love even when it wasn't easy. La Vaughn also enjoyed taking care of children. She often babysat for a single mother she knew named Jolly who had two teenage pregnancies and worked at the local children's hospital folding sheets. His desire to help children in need was truly commendable. The story began when Vaughn was only fifteen years old. Vaughn described her school life and her two best friends, Myrtle and Annie. Myrtle and Annie had been her friends throughout her childhood, but now it seemed that the three friends were drifting apart as their common interests changed. Both Myrtle and Annie had become very involved in a religious youth group that Vaughn had no interest in joining. Vaughn felt that religious leaders… middle of paper… Vaughn was a more relatable character. Similar to Korrina from Behind the Bedroom Wall, Vaughn learned that those who accept those who don't understand or don't agree always lead a happier and more fulfilling life. Korinna realized this when she began to learn about the Jewish people hidden in her home. Instead of hating them, she learned to accept them and be empathetic towards their terrible situation. While each of these stories is set in very different circumstances, I believe they both sent common messages to readers. I would recommend this story to anyone who loves stories that focus on the maturation of youth through adolescence. I felt that the climax of this story wasn't as exciting as it could have been. However, the plot was very interesting and entertaining. I can't wait to read more stories by this author!
