Topic > Ulysses S. Grant was a true epic hero - 1114

My epic hero was a military lieutenant from Ohio. He was born and raised in Ohio and attended a military high school. Since he was a military man, he knew a lot about leadership. As he grew up, he became a general and one of many presidents of the United States. As president, he did many good things for our country. Ulysses S. Grant, to me, is an epic hero because he led and fought in the military for our country and was a great president. Ulysses S. Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant. He was born April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Grant was named after his grandmother after his father lent her a book called Telemachus of Fenelon. His grandmother named him after Odysseus, but with Odysseus' Roman name, Ulysses. He and his parents moved the following year to Georgetown, Ohio. His father ran a tannery business at the time. Ulysses' father, Jesse Grant, enrolled Ulysses in a U.S. military academy at West Point. When the congressman nominated Ulysses for West Point, he mistakenly thought that Ulysses; he used his mother's maiden name, Simpson, as his middle name. Odysseus accepted the new name and did nothing about it. He had said that the “S” in his name didn't name anything. Ulysses graduated from West Point in 1843 and was an accomplished horseman. Ulysses was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 4th U.S. Infantry. After 1843, when he graduated, Ulysses met the sister of his West Point classmates, Julia Dent. Julia's parents were a planter and merchant. Grant had taken part in the Mexican-American War, where he and Julia were separated. He misses her a lot and writes her letters often. When the war ended, Odysseus returned to Missouri and married Julia. They married in August 1848. Hi... middle of paper... read his memoirs, to provide for his family. He was later diagnosed with throat cancer in 1884. The very next year, on July 23, Ulysses died. He spent summers in the Adirondack Mountains with his family. His friend, Mark Twain, published his memoirs. Ulysses and his wife were both buried in Riverside Park in New York. At Ulysses' funeral procession, more than a million people were present to witness it. In conclusion, Ulysses S. Grant was a true epic hero. He helped stop the Civil War, became America's 18th president, supported freedmen's rights, was a national hero, and created our first national park. Without him we might still be Union and Confederate or perhaps freedmen's rights would not be what they are today. He truly saved our country. Ulysses S. Grant is an epic hero, a great president and a great leader (at war or in the White House)).
