Topic > Cindy Staring at the Keswick Theater - 733

The Keswick Theater had the honor of hosting the Cindy Lauper, "She Is So Unusual 30th Anniversary Tour", this Friday, November 15th. Indeed it was a night where "Fans Just Want to Have Fun", was the operator and we certainly did! The Keswick is located in the center of Glenside. The seating is comfortable and the acoustics are the best. There are a number of good restaurants and a great coffee shop. Come a little early and chill in the coffee shop and many times you can see the band having a warm beer. I recommend arriving about 45 minutes before the show, so parking isn't a challenge. The theater was designed by the famous architect Horace Trumbauer and some of its original splendor has been preserved. It's in the midst of a major renovation, however, which doesn't detract from the experience. The concert opened with Hunter Valentine, a Canadian indie/punk rock band with a rounded house punch. They have an outspoken style and push the music towards the audience. The audience was quite diverse: young fans, mostly women, many mothers with their daughter dressed like Cindy, and yes, us, the people who were with them when it started. The lead singer of Hunter Valentine is and has a powerful and deep voice. He has a nice stage presence and performs with his bandmates. The point is, they're an all-female band. I'm not familiar with their music, but I liked "Just Another Love Song", "Staten Island Dream Tour" and I think the title was "Feel Like Tonight". The band received polite applause and performed about 10 songs. Being the warm-up act for someone like Cindy is both a blessing and a curse. I think they did a great job and were rewarded by the fans without leaving a trace of... half paper... music, I guess that's why I like it so much, but I think she really reached out to the audience with her acoustic version. She has a terrific voice and boy did it work. He played the dulcimer with ease and Eric played the melodica with passion and sensitivity that made this wonderful song a true experience. Cindy is a true Renaissance woman. She has been nominated for every award under the music sun. He won several of the most recent Tonys for his "Kinky Boots" score. Not being a music critic leaves me as a music fan. Fan of what I think is just amazing. Music. I'm usually amazed by most of the artists I go to see. I think Cindy is more than an artist, she's an entertainer. Someone who has control over his art and his fan base. This was another simply extraordinary evening of live music, in a fine venue with a mostly fun-seeking and adoring audience.
