Technology has grown over the last ten years offering humans a more efficient and better lifestyle than what we had ten or twenty years ago. As time passes, technology will continue to improve and our lives will become simpler and more efficient. A technology that is developing right now, which will soon be integrated into our daily lives is augmented reality. Augmented reality is the idea of a computerized data base system that appears visually in the real world and in real time through optical devices such as glasses. Augmented reality implements 3D and 2D images, as well as numbers and texts in the human peripheral for an enhanced version of the world view. Many believe that augmented reality will soon be implemented into our daily lives as we will have immediate access to any source of information at our disposal, making us even smarter. That's why I chose this topic. For this essay I used the following academic articles: Augmented Reality: Overview and Direction of Focus for AR in Education, Death of Pokémon GO The Economics and Human Cost of Using Apps While Driving, and Augmented Reality in Health Education: An Integrative Review, Augmented Reality Trends In Education: A Systematic Review of Augmented Reality Research and Applications in Education. Finally, I'm using an article written by Francesca Larkin titled "Advantages and Disadvantages of Augmented Reality," in which she explains why augmented reality could benefit us and how it could cause problems in our society. Augmented reality will help us achieve such a feat of efficiency that once implemented, we will be able to complete many long tasks and complete them in such a short time. Considering the hype around augmented reality, it is highly possible that such a device will be used in our education. Augmented reality will give students the ability to learn more visually and learn virtually. Many researchers have explored how augmented reality can help in different fields. An example is that Liu, Jenkins, Sanderson, Fabian, and Russel examined that augmented reality in the medical field helps the student to visually learn the human anatomy and what each organ in the body does and how it works. Augmented reality can also be used in the fields of architecture where students will be able to produce a 3D structure and visually see how the structure will be able to stand on its own. As augmented reality grows, it will be used in our medical fields where it will improve surgical and clinical procedures and become more convenient to use as information will be displayed in our peripherals. Such a device will allow the surgeon to prepare for future surgeries as he will be presented with a visual anatomy of the patient's condition and will be able to decide how to treat him. Augmented reality will be able to fully support the surgeon who is operating on a patient, navigating it and showing the surgeon the vital procedures that will reduce the operation time. The use of augmented reality in the medical field will overall increase the probability of producing many new procedures and will help the doctors and surgeon during their task. Augmented reality can also help students with disabilitiesphysical and learning. Many researchers have found that using augmented reality storybooks to bring stories to life can bring positive results as students are able to remember key concepts from the story and have a better understanding. These types of storytelling could easily help many students who have difficulty learning using textbooks. Students can be more actively involved in astoria which creates a more interactive environment and helps motivate students to learn. There are many things that augmented reality can do to help people with disabilities, such as overlaying audio for people with vision problems, subtitles for people with hearing difficulties. With wearable devices that enable augmented reality, such as glasses, users are hands-free and allow the user to use both hands to interact and learn in their environment. Augmented reality can also be used for object-based modeling, which is particularly useful in the architectural field where they are able to imagine how the structure would look and how stable it would be under more challenging conditions using the device's 3D functions to create such structures. This is also useful for those who are looking to renovate their home or celebrate without spending money. This can be useful for many designers who can imagine how the room could look with a certain type of furniture created virtually through their devices. With augmented reality we are able to acquire information almost instantly during our adventure in our reality and create a hands-on learning experience for many students who have difficulty learning through the use of textbooks. Augmented reality can also help many professionals create an even more vivid visual idea of how they want to execute their plans and operations. While augmented reality can be used to bring us even closer, it can also attract unwanted guests such as hackers and hackers. it creeps in. An article written by Francesca Larkin talks about the advantages and disadvantages of augmented reality. He explains that although augmented reality can make our lives easier, it is still the technology that can still be accessible to unwanted guests. Many people are concerned about how augmented reality could put its users' privacy at risk. Francesca Larkins explains: "Here in the UK we are far from anonymous and some people are unaware of how much of their personal information is accessible to complete strangers." Augmented reality opens up a whole new world of privacy as hackers are unable to locate where you are and are also able to see exactly the same thing you are seeing. This can be a big problem as our society is moving towards a more technological world and everything can be accessible and can also be used against. In our generation we are always constantly distracted by technology which creates many problems in our society such as distracted driving. Nowadays we always have our eyes glued to our phones instead of the road, which can cause serious injuries not only to ourselves but to others around us. Augmented reality on portable devices like our phones can be very dangerous as we have to look at our devices from above instead of looking where we are going. Some health problems that can affect the user if AR devices are not designed properly is tunnel vision which distracts the user and in some cases can put them in dangerous situations. One game in particular that has had a great impact on our society andDistracted Driving is a mobile app called Pokemon Go. Pokemon Go was released on July 6, 2016 on mobile devices. Pokemon Go was an augmented reality game that allowed players to see a creature called "Pokemon" on their phone using their devices' camera and GPS location. This game brought in around 100 million users in the first few months and the increase in insurance for distracted driving has increased since then. An academic article titled “The Death by Pokémon Go: The Economics and Human Cost of Using Apps While Driving.” Written by Mara Faccio and John J. McConnell explains that there has been an increase in damage to vehicles in the vicinity of Pokestops. Pokestops are essentially special landmarks around the world, like a graffiti painting or a stone tablet. Being near pokestops allows the player to obtain in-game rewards such as Pokeballs which are ammunition to capture the creature found in the game. Many people have realized that the most efficient way to get to each pokestop is to drive. This causes many drivers to keep their eyes on their mobile devices instead of looking towards the road and causing damage to the vehicle and injuring themselves or others. Their studies showed that in the first 140 days of the game's release, approximately 134 car accidents occurred. Causing vehicle damage insurance to increase to about $500,000 or about 22%. Many articles included on these websites cover cases where many drivers were distracted by the app and hit a pedestrian, killing them. Other articles talk about many teenagers who find themselves in a dangerous neighborhood and are attacked by people who use the game to harm other players. Another problem that augmented reality will face is fatigue. Since the user is constantly looking at a screen, they are forced to maintain their attention and focus on the screen in front of them and after extensive use of AR devices the user may become fatigued and extensive use of such device may affect the health of the 'user. Some health-related problems that a user may face are nausea, seizures, and vision loss. Many studies have shown that prolonged use of a device can cause a user's personality to become more aggressive and become more isolating towards their friends, family and colleagues. Overall the use of augmented reality can be really dangerous as augmented reality happens in the online world where everything is accessible and can be easily hacked. User privacy can be very difficult to maintain and can be an issue for many users who are debating whether augmented reality is worth using. Furthermore, if the user of the device is not careful about his environment, it can take him to many dangerous areas where he can harm himself or harm others since his eyes are far from reality. Since I'm a visual learner, watching YouTube videos really helps me see how augmented reality could shape our world and all the capabilities it can do for us. Over the course of the school year we learned many things about the Internet such as determinism, management and control, as well as gender and racial biases. One topic in particular that may relate to augmented reality is Internet addiction. Over the past decade we have seen technology improve dramatically becoming more useful and more convenient, one device in particular being our smartphones. Smartphones have become the device that can replace everything and compact it into such a small device. We constantly check our smartphones and distract ourselves from reality in order to use our devices. With reality coming into play.
