Toward the end of the eighth part of this chapter, the author described history as a system, "the system of human experience linked in an 'single, inexorable chain' (Gasset). He insisted that believing is not an operation or work of intellectual mechanism, but is the function of the living being as such, the function of guiding the conduct and execution of its work. Man is the entity that makes itself, an entity that traditional ontology encountered only when its course was coming to an end and which consequently gave up the attempt to understand. For Gasset, a person should not only make himself the most important thing, but what he must do is determine what it will be. After all, man is nothing without imagination, without the ability to invent a conception of life to conceive the character he will be (203). Furthermore, human life is not an entity that changes accidentally, but rather the opposite. However, the author argues that if the reality of my life right now is what it is, what it will be depends on what is commonly called "experience." of life'. This life experience is not composed of my personally experienced past, but is also the past of my ancestors passed down to me by society (Gasset 210). The prediction of what society will be in a given period depends greatly on what has been. This means that the past will determine or build the future. The better or worse future depends on what society has done or is doing respectively.
