Emotion is not a simple phenomenon. Although emotions are heightened in almost every significant aspect of our lives, they are the least understood aspect of any human experience. Describing emotions is also an extremely difficult task. People find it very difficult to express what they think might be an emotion. It is also a vital design element and has a strong relationship with emotions. These claims are supported by manifestations of color in product design and marketing and also in other fields such as color therapy, color meditation and image consultancy. The phenomenon of the relationship between color and emotion has been studied by the consumer, the marketing and advertising industry, and industrial design. For some years now, all sectors influenced by the use of colors have been recognizing the effective role of emotions in their field of research. The role of emotions is studied to be able to create positive emotional responses in their users and reduce the problems of negative emotions drawn by the design. (Norman, 2004) Many color research studies have been conducted to establish the relationship between human emotions and colors. These studies have primarily focused on human emotional responses to a specific color to help derive positive or negative connotations. In these studies, participants simply match adjectives with different colors without specifying their reference to an internal space. It is important to design the color based on the user's emotional reaction. When designing with color, living environments should be analyzed as they can influence human reaction on a psychological and physiological level. This approach is called the “emotionally ergonomic approach to design” (Jin et al., 2009). Therefore, this research is based on the argument that a conscious effort should be made to demonstrate the strong relationship between color and emotions specifically in an indoor environment. The purpose of the study is to develop an argument regarding the associations of color and emotion within the environment. The structure of an interior environment is necessary to understand how inhabitants influence color in spaces. It is crucial for designers and interior designers to understand the effect of color to reduce psychological threats and create environments of emotional well-being. Through my thesis, I will shed light on the various aspects that connect human emotional responses to color. First I will try to discover color as a phenomenon. The various theories, philosophies and properties of color will need to be understood. Subsequently, the history of emotions, its components, the category and related phenomena will be elaborated. Subsequently, the symbolic associations of color and the empirical implementations of color and emotions will be elaborated. The emotional response to color in interior spaces will then be revealed. There are various other aspects associated with colors such as light and textures. The reaction of the user group to the same color under different lighting conditions also varies.
