In our fast-paced society, Americans struggle to find healthier alternatives when it comes to food. Consumers are starting to be more environmentally conscious by choosing to buy organic fruit and vegetables. Scott Meyer is the editor of Organic Gardening Magazine and is featured in the "Organic Prayers" video on the National Geographic website says, ". . . organic food is a great product. It tastes better than any food you can buy. . and working in harmony with nature produces a great result Organic food products are grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, irradiation, growth hormones, or sewage sludge.” The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimates that twenty pounds of pesticides are used per capita in the United States per year. At least fifty of these pesticides are classified as carcinogenic” (Burke 13). This statistic from the administration responsible for the advancement of public health is believed to know that inorganic foods can cause serious risks to human health. Organic foods can have a positive impact on our health, the environment and animal welfare. It is proven that organic foods contain more natural nutrients beneficial to our health. According to an article on the National Geographic website it states: “The Organic Trade Association and the Organic Consumers Association point to studies that confirm improved nutritional value, such as evidence published in the September 2010 issue of PLoS One magazine that measured a higher level high in antioxidants, vitamin C and phenolic compounds and organ...... center of paper ......d water conservation and pollution reduction. Some people are concerned if animals are mistreated or forced into confined spaces, but organic farming offers a better deal when it comes to organic meat, letting livestock roam freely and eat natural vegetables. Preventive measures are used to improve animal welfare and help minimize disease. In contrast, conventional breeding methods use drugs on animals to promote faster growth and gain weight more efficiently. Organically raised animals are never given genetically modified hormones or antibiotics. Consumers can help change food policy and urge government and industry to stop unnecessary use of antibiotics in agriculture. Therefore, naturally grown foods always have a positive impact on human health, the ecosystem and well-treated animals that participate in organic farming.
