People separate and then reunite; people argue and then reconcile. Likewise, Christianity also involves separation, reunion, discussion and reconciliation. Christianity began as a single body, and then multiple factors gradually contributed to the split between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. Some of these factors are such as different understandings of Christianity, different views towards the authority of the Pope, and different ideas of Church governance. All the different thoughts created disagreement between the two branches of the Church. In other words, conflict arose and ultimately led to the Great Schism. The differences between these two branches of the church were significant because they are the result of this Great Schism. The Great Schism is also known as the East-West divide. It is obvious that this division was based on geography. The geographical problem was not the only reason, but also “… cultural, political and economic factors; however its fundamental cause was not secular but theological.”(Kallistos43-44). As a result of the Great Schism, the eastern part of Europe established the Greek-speaking Eastern Orthodox Church. The western side created the Latin-speaking Roman Catholic Church. Both churches believe they are superior to the other. The Roman Catholic Church believed itself to be the mother church. In other words, it is the origin because it was centered in the city of Rome, which was the place that Peter had a deep connection with. The Eastern Orthodox believed that it contained the truth, even though it is not the original church, but it had the truth. This increased the tension of estrangement and led to conflict. “…It was about making…half of the original Hebrew Bible.” (Hallam 6). Furthermore, they had a similar concept regarding the meaning of the Eucharist. Both churches agreed that the supper is holy and divine. They also believed that humanity received forgiveness of sins through the mystical supper by meeting Christ. Furthermore, they have the same opinions regarding understanding Mary. They both believe that Mary was the mother of God and were also the first saints. Thus, the effect of the sacraments was also similar between these two churches. Saints used to describe holy people. Both thought that this group of people could act between God and man like Christ. The Great Schism of Christianity which occurred in 1054 was mainly caused by the different ideas of understanding of Christianity and led to the variation of doctrine, truth and different style of government of the Church.
