Was the Mexican War an exercise in American imperialism? In my opinion I would say yes, it was an exercise in American imperialism. There is much evidence that the Americans' intentions towards Mexico were imperialistic. In an article written by Professor Rodolfo Acuna, from Occupied America: A History of Chicanos, 3rd ed. claims that Euroamerica has taken advantage of Mexico and its new and unstable government. I firmly believe that the United States would expand its territory westward. It only made sense considering the fact that the United States was growing thanks to the industrial revolution that began in the 1820s. Although in my opinion the United States was putting on a front and acting as if they were trying to buy the territory of Mexico in the right way; I think Mexico really didn't have a chance when it was rebuilding its constitution and forming a new government; This left Mexico at the time weak and vulnerable. American imperialism initially exerted itself by attempting to annex Texas. I can definitely say that America would conquer some of Mexico's territories, which consisted of the major land masses of California, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Texas. After Mexico built its new constitution in 1835 which centralized its powers and outlawed slavery throughout the territory of Mexico; American settlers in Texas declared independence from Mexico, making it Verdin2America's first act of imperialism. After Texas declared independence from Mexico, President and General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became disgusted with the imperialistic ways of the United States; He leads his army into Texas where his plan was to stop the rebellion. Behold, General Santa Anna was defeated by t...... middle of paper ......angry!... Bring our weapons, Ameirca knows how to crush, as well as expand." This simply shows that the 'America was exercising its imperialism. The United States reached Veracruz with its post-war imperialistic ways. Santa Anna came out of exile and returned to Mexico and became president again in 1853. of the United States. 1853 known as the Gadsden Purchase, the United States purchases what is now known as Arizona from President Santa Anna. Ask yourself: was the Mexican War an exercise of American imperialism? Your answer should absolutely be: the evidence that I provide are enough to persuade anyone to agree that the Mexican War was definitely an exercise in American imperialism. As I agree with Professor Rodolfo Acuna, Euroamerica took advantage of Mexico.
