In “The Growth of the City: An Introduction to a Research Project” by Ernest W. Burgess (1925), the author delves into the processes that lead to the construction of a city city modern or urban environment. Burgess lists the following qualities: skyscrapers, department stores, newspapers, shopping centers, etc. (p. 154). Burgess also includes social work as part of a modern urban environment. This is supported by his building model based on concentric circles that divided Chicago into five zones. The first was called the central ring intended for a business district. Secondly, there was an area for trade and light manufacturing. Third, there was an “area for workers' houses” (p. 156). The fourth is the residential area of high-class condominiums. The fifth is where the suburban houses are located. Burgess goes on to write that there is a tendency for each internal area to extend its reach into another area.
