Montresor's need for revenge is so strong that he is willing to end the life of someone he calls "dear Fortunato" and "friend". Revenge can also play an important role in the Montresor family. We can make this hypothesis by reading the family motto "No one provokes me with impunity" and also "the foot crushes a snake whose fangs are stuck in the heel".
