Wiesel's community at the beginning of the story is a small town in Transylvania where the Jews of Sighet live. It is called “The Jewish Community of Sighet”. This is where he spent his childhood. By day he studied the Talmud and at night he ran to the synagogue to cry over the destruction of the Temple. His world is a place where Jews can live and practice Judaism.
