You are at an interview, the interviewer says you are not qualified for the job because of your gender. What would you say? Sexism has caused stereotyping and harassment in the workforce and in professional sports, so people should know more about sexism. The media is a powerful communication tool, producing both negative and positive impacts on society. Sexism is a major factor in the workforce. Today, men and women have difficulty entering fields dominated by the opposite gender. This happened thanks to the media, which showed us that men have certain “right” jobs, as do women. Women continue to dominate traditional female professions such as cosmetology jobs, where 92.9% are female workers (Wolfe). If a man were to go into cosmetology, he would most likely be judged for doing that job, because according to the stereotype they cannot have a female job. Women have difficulty reaching high-level positions. “Women represent only 21 of the S&P 500 CEOs” (Berman). This happened because the media imposed stereotypes that it is wrong for women to hold high-level positions. The situation is improving: in 2013, female CFOs increased by 35% in large US companies compared to 2012 (Frier and Hymowitz). The job market for men and women is still unfair, but it is starting to become fair. Another big sexist factor in the workforce is that women are paid less than men for the exact same job. “According to a recent study by the Institute for Women's Policy Research, women are paid 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. This is an average difference of more than $10,000 per year” (Berman). Why is this? Some people believe this is because women gravitate toward the bottom......the center of the paper......idance, November 2010. Web.
