The United Nations Peacebuilding Architecture: A Tool or Obstacle to Greater Coordination?I. IntroductionPeacebuilding is the phenomenon where a range of international and national actors collaborate within various support structures in order to address the fundamental/root causes of violence, consolidate peace and avoid a relapse into conflict in fragile states. With the advent of globalization and the increase in interdependence between states, economic growth and development have occurred; However, increased interconnectivity has also created an unstable environment for new violence and conflict to occur, particularly in fragile and post-conflict states. External tensions, such as transnational terrorism, international crime, and global economic crises, increase the likelihood of violence in fragile states and hinder development efforts needed to strengthen weak national institutions. The development of the state, and state institutions, has become increasingly intertwined/interconnected with security. Investment in sound development is a crucial component needed to effectively protect the volatile environment of a globally interconnected system; however, lack of development can also create harmful security risks such as vulnerability and renewed violence. With the changing nature of conflict and collective security in the postmodern era, peace operations have begun to shift from a minimalist approach of maintaining the status quo to a complex and multifaceted approach, or peacebuilding.
