His political outlook has changed once again, be that as it may; he eventually came to support a more rapid rebuilding of Texas. He opposed the Radicals Scheme to make West Texas a distinct Unionist state and removed his support for black suffrage. But as a result, Hamilton became one of the state's most sensible Republicans and ran for office against the radical Edmund J. Davis in the governor's race of 1869. Davis was the one who won the election, yet Hamilton remained an oratorical opponent of the policies radicals. He never sought an open office after this fall. But he was still a leader in the Taxpayers' Convention in the year 1871.
