In Unfair Play: What's Wrong with Sport, Joe Humphreys lists numerous reasons why sport is bad for society. His reasons range from sport being discriminatory to sport promoting the decline of gang culture. While I disagree with Humphreys' statement that sport is harmful to society, there are undoubtedly some components of sport that are harmful to society, one of which is the quota system. The quota system was introduced in South Africa after the fall of apartheid in in order to bring “players of colour” into more areas of sport in the country. When this system was first introduced it faced opposition and today there is a move to make the quota system more stringent in order to have more black players in the international cricket team. To me this is a ridiculous concept that has numerous short falls and will never be able to operate effectively.
