Anguish and GriefIn the graphic novel Fun Home, by Allison Bechdel, sexual self-discovery plays a vital role in the development of the main character, Allison Bechdel herself; furthermore, Bechdel describes the plethora of factors crucial in the formation of who one is before, during and after his sexual development. Bechdel's anguish and pain begin with all the stories she encountered at home, with her respective family member – especially her father – at school, and with the community in which she grew up. Bechdel's arduous process of queer sexual development is throughout the novel as complex as her own subjectivity. The main points highlight the difficulties behind which mainly focus on the dynamics between her and her father. Throughout the novel, she highlights many accounts of feeling lost and ashamed for coming out and having the courage to express this to her parents. Many events and factors have contributed to this development that many seem to fear. In her novel, Bechdel's complex sexual self-development is a powerful struggle for her to understand and acknowledge her sexual orientation. One can simply observe the pain and struggle that Bechdel encountered in his personal development process, especially in one of his monologues when he discusses the impact of discovering his father's homosexual ways on his past. She states: "Just four months before (her father's suicide), I had made an announcement to my parents, 'I am a lesbian' but it was such a thorough and convincing assumption that I saw no reason not to share it immediately... My homosexuality it then remained a purely theoretical, untested hypothesis” (Bechdel 58). After receiving the news that her father was… at the center of the paper… in her family, Alison felt a discomfort in being herself; in fact, at times she felt she had almost no say in choosing items such as clothes. This was also quite complex when it came to her subjectivity, such as when Bruce wanted Alison to wear a particular dress at a wedding, or when he insisted that she wear a particular set of pearls, other factors, such as his relationship with his girlfriend and the news he would discover after his father's death, also seemed to play a major role play an important role. Alison Bechdel's battle in her sexual development has been filled with anguish and pain due to all its complexities, but now she has the confidence in herself and her sexuality to present in her eloquent and impactful graphic novel, Fun Home..
