In Jim's situation, he befriended a pirate who took him in and treated him like a son, however, the pirate's intentions while finding the treasure planet did not they were healthy. Before the two characters reached a consensual relationship, they initially clashed and Hawkins had to deal with the pirate's unruly temper and almost being thrown overboard by the rest of the crew members. However, he gained their trust and formed a fatherly bond with the captain in the middle of the film and got the nickname "Jimbo". As a result of this newfound friendship, Jim's behavior changes and he becomes more of a free and jovial spirit throughout the journey to Treasure Planet.
