Broadway musicals, flashy lights and choreography. For some it's a memorable night in New York during the Christmas season, and it's a lifelong dream to realize for some people. According to the American Theater Wing, 80% of shows that open on Broadway end up losing money. However, Broadway investors and producers do everything they can to make "the show" happen, the show will run for years on Broadway, the show will tour nationwide and make millions of dollars. They adapt new trends and style to become a "hit". Broadway is constantly changing and adapting to new things, which is healthy for its existence. Since the British invasion of musical theater, Broadway investors and producers have spent more money producing shows. Cameron Mackintosh, a leading producer of English musical theater and Andrew Lloyd Webber, a legendary English composer of many successful musicals have opened the doors to “mega musicals”. Cameron loved using magnificent sets and lighting. In 1985, the musical Les Misérables, using a huge barricade and rotating stage, opened in London's West End. Thanks to the success of Les Misérables, Mackintosh and Webber were able to produce other mega musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, Evita and Miss Saigon. Andrew Lloyd Webber said, "The Thru-sung soundtrack is my favorite, but it's just expensive" (Healy). The thru-song score is a type of musical score in which all verses are sung and none are spoken. The American musical mega trend was led by Disney on Broadway™. The stage adaptation of The Lion King received a negative review from theater critics, but its charming costumes and depiction of animals were an instant hit with young audiences, and the show still remains one of Broadway's most popular musicals . Because of its unique style and low budget requirements, music magazines encouraged universities and regional theaters to develop their own music and story. Off-Broadway's experimental and creative shows have also influenced the Broadway community. The Book of Mormon, a new musical from the creators of Avenue Q and inspired by many experimental Off-Broadway shows, is considered one of the most cynical, creative and successful Broadway musicals of the decade. While it is crucial to follow the trend and adapt new things, Broadway producers should remember that there is beauty in classical values. The revival of Les Misérables is a great example of blending modern and classic. New technology makes classical music and plot much more powerful.
