Warning: Secondhand smoke kills The advertisement I chose shows the effects of secondhand smoke on people of all ages. The ad shows an image of a newborn baby with half of his face covered in black soot, just like the skin depicted on a lifelong smoker. The child is shown with a lit cigarette in his mouth. The bold text reads “Second-hand smoke.” A little side note in the ad reads, "Warning: May kill your baby." This advert should be taken as a warning sign to smokers everywhere that secondhand smoke affects not only themselves, but everyone around them and the author does a great job of describing this. The purpose of this advertisement is to show how dangerous secondhand smoke is to others, especially children. Its aim is also to convey the message that the general health and well-being of adults and children is affected by secondhand smoke produced by others. Everywhere in the community there will always be someone who smokes. 21.2% of Georgians smoke cigarettes. The author is telling the viewers that it is so important to keep our children away from this. Not only does secondhand smoke affect a child's health, but a child exposed to secondhand smoke is more likely to one day become a smoker. This ad is used as a warning sign. Parents everywhere need to pay more attention to what children are exposed to. The target audience of this ad is smokers all over the world who may have started to neglect the health of the people around them. The author is very direct with the message he is trying to send to the audience. As Jean Kilbourne said, “Much of the power of advertising comes from the belief that it doesn't affect us.” (Kilbourne, 256) A mother, who is... middle of paper... not "killed" by second-hand smoke. The point the author is trying to make is very clear. Smoking affects everyone, not just the person blowing the smoke. Overall, the author does a great job of conveying the message to the viewers. The child smoking a cigarette and the bold letters are the first two things that catch people's attention. So, the ad does a good job of making viewers think about the decision they are making by smoking in the presence of others, especially children. Anyone who sees this ad will begin to think about their actions and the effects they have on others. Viewers will now begin to realize how many children they may have affected by smoking around them. This advert is a great way to eliminate secondhand smoke from our society, after all no one wants to see babies and toddlers with lit cigarettes in their mouths.
