Topic > Different aspects and applications of impression...

Every day people participate, consciously or unconsciously, in impression management. Impression management can be described as a way in which individuals do things that will impact how other individuals perceive them, an event, an object, or another person. This is often used to create positive images and can carry social, cultural and spiritual implications. Erving Goffman calls it “self-presentation” because impression management is often seen as a theoretical performance. Children and adults can use different aspects of impression management to shape their personal paths in life. I have used impression management in my life in various ways, including in everyday social situations and job interviews. Sometimes impression management can be used effectively and sometimes not, and this is clear from my subsequent experiences. In the spring of my freshman year at Berry I decided to apply for the on-campus position to serve on the Krannert Center Activity Board (KCAB). During the previous quarter when I was at Berry, I found that I was not involved in the campus community and found myself wanting more from my Berry College experience. I thought that applying for a position on the Krannert Center Activity Board would open up my personal connections and inevitably take me further as I pursued my studies at Berry. It is important to note that at that time I was a very reserved and shy person and was not the epitome of a great student. During the application process I was worried about my interview. First there was a group interview and then separately five different workers who were already part of the activities committee of the Krannert Center were interviewed. This last part of the article... half of the document... all situations provide paths for using impression management, but in the two specific situations I provided, I found that I used the concept more than than I initially thought. Often impression management can be used to manipulate a situation, person, or idea, based on what the individual is trying to get out of it. With a combination of manipulating their values, roles, and status, an individual can alter how others view them. My examples of using impression management in my life help illustrate that sometimes you don't even realize that you are altering who you are to make things go the way you want. I believe it is important for people to realize how often impression management is used so that everyone can be familiar with the process and can use it themselves or observe it in others.
