Soul Surfer is an inspiring film. It is full of drama that turns the audience's world upside down. By capturing humanity, the film draws it in and transforms it into something beautiful. It is based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm during a vicious shark attack. Sean McNamara, the director, had planned to make the film immediately after the attack in 2003. Seven years into the plot, it premiered in theaters in April 2011 as a PG film. His aim was to inform viewers that anything is possible. In the film, Sean explains that people can overcome life's challenges with perspective, determination and support. Soul Surfer is about overcoming fears in light of a misfortune. After many interviews with Bethany's family and reviewing her autobiography, the film began to take shape for Sean. The setting is Kauai, Hawaii, where the film traces what happened to Hamilton that day. It was early Halloween morning when Bethany went for an early morning surf. As she glided through the water, a tiger shark appeared and attacked her, ripping her arm from its socket. That day she unfortunately lost more than half of the blood in her body, but she didn't let this misfortune stop her. Indeed, his steps toward recovery have been phenomenal. One might suggest that Bethany does indeed have salt water running through her veins. How else to explain the passion that lights you up for surfing? Not even the detachment of her arm could separate her from the waves. Throughout the film, he demonstrated how we should never give up on our dreams. He showed surprising tenacity immediately after surgery when the first thing he asked was, “When will I be able to surf again?” During his healing journey, he took part in a mission trip where... middle of paper... no name tag. His recovery helps him relate to the audience and shows them that they can turn previously vague goals into vivid realities. Bethany may have suffered the loss of an arm, but she certainly won and inspired numerous people today to achieve their dreams. Standing full, whole and restored, Bethany Hamilton is an inspiring person who surfs because she is drawn to the soul. Works Cited Common Sense Media. The California Endowment, 2011. Web.
